I just installed this tonight. I wouldn't be able to tell you anything
about speed, but the new snapshot's memory footprint is definitely not
smaller:
westferry:/localtmp/ali/ntpm++> time g++-2.6 -g -I/mas/vision/include/alpha -I/mas/vision/include/common -I.. -D_POSIX_C_SOURCE=1 -ftemplate-depth-30 -c eigface.cc -o boxfilter.o
swap space below 10 percent free

Virtual memory exhausted!
28.677u 5.093s 0:36.15 93.3% 3+1337k 0+425io 0pf+0w
all my limits are set to unlimited, and this is not a trivially small machine.
i'm guessing this is a bug rather than typical expected performance. it
might be confined to "OSF1 westferry V4.0 1229 alpha".
this works with 2.95.2.
i'd say wait. snapshots are more difficult to install than the distributions,
if you haven't installed egcs snapshots before.
Ali.
